STRAWBERRY GROWERS X4

Vusi’s farm is a leading producer of strawberries, known for innovation, high-quality produce and a supportive work environment.

JOB SUMMARY:

The company would like to recruit four experienced and motivated Strawberry Growers to manage and optimise the performance of strawberry production units. This is a hands-on role, focused on crop care, irrigation, fertigation, climate control, pest control, disease management and daily growing operations. The incumbent will play a key role in delivering consistent high-quality fruit whilst driving continuous improvements across production.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Quality Control & Assurance

  • Crop Management: Plan and execute planting, cultivation, pruning and de-leafing to optimise plant health and yield

  • Environmental Control: Manage climate (temperature, humidity, light) and irrigation/fertigation systems in greenhouses or fields.

  • Pest & Disease Control: Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, monitor for issues and apply treatments safely.

  • Harvesting Oversight: Supervise harvesting, ensuring berries meet strict quality, size and colour standards and track yields.

  • Maintenance: Maintain growing systems, equipment and cleanliness of fertilizer/chemical storage areas.

  • Data & Reporting: Monitor growing conditions, analyse data, and maintain detailed records of operations

  • Team Collaboration: Coordinate with managers and lead crews, providing training and direction

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 / Matric, preferably with: Agricultural Sciences, Life Sciences / Biology and Mathematics

  • Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture, such as: Diploma in Plant Production or Diploma in Horticulture or National Certificate: Plant Production (NQF Level 2–4)

  • Proven experience as a grower/assistant grower in soft fruit or horticulture (preferably strawberries)

  • Strong knowledge of plant physiology, crop nutrition, climate control and pest/disease management

  • Hands-on operational ability with willingness to be actively involved in daily growing tasks

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond quickly to changing crop conditions

  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach

  • Experience in controlled-environment production, knowledge of modern growing system

  • Ability to use monitoring software, control systems and analyse data

  • Capable of physically demanding tasks in various weather, including lifting, bending and working outdoors

  • Excellent decision-making, communication and organisational skills

  • Reliable, dedicated and willing to work long hours during peak seasons
